In a seminar in October, the beginning of October if I recall correctly, we had a discussion about an article called the “Nagging Wife” Revisited: Women and the Fur Trade in New France.  I mentioned to my group it took me a long time to read the material due to all the names given and information given.  This was true for my group as a whole.  It was interesting to know that the things I have been struggling with my classmates were also struggling with my struggles were actually their struggles as well.  This is also true for a piece we did in class called “An Eighteenth-Century Visit to New France, 1752”.  I remember, and I apologize I don’t know her name, but there was a student in my class who said she had a great deal of difficulty reading the short article.  It is interesting how many people find it hard to interpret or understand history.  I think this is because everyone can have their own interpretation of a past event depending who wrote about it.

I have attached my reading log on the article, ‘”Nagging Wife” Revisited: Women and the Fur Trade in New France’.  I would have to admit this was not one of my better reading logs but I think this is all due to the fact that it was difficult to read the article.  The reason I found our lecture so valuable because Dr. Penny Light would always do a lecture on the last reading log we did, because I had little knowledge on this topic and I had difficulty with the reading log I found it helpful to have the lecture to help in my understanding.  I also think the title of the article gave a clue as to what the article was about and that helped with my understanding.  What I gathered from the article was that the wife was not just a “nagging wife” but an active participant with in the family and the family business.  I hope you enjoy my reading log on the “nagging wife”.
